About Foothills Alpaca Farm

From Humble Beginnings to a Beloved Alpaca Farm

Foothills Alpaca Farm was born out of a dream, a deep respect for animals, and a love of sustainable fiber. Established in April 2006 in Backus, Minnesota, our journey began with a single pregnant female alpaca and a juvenile. Before the animals even arrived at our farm, tragedy struck—we lost the juvenile to a rare allergic reaction to a vaccine. But that heartbreaking start didn’t stop us.

Instead, it fueled our determination. We brought in another female and her three-week-old cria and began building what would become one of the most respected small alpaca farms in the region.

Over the next decade, our herd grew—and so did our reputation. Visitors came from across the state and beyond to meet our alpacas, learn about their care, and purchase our handcrafted fiber goods. We built a strong community around education, ethical breeding, and quality fiber production.

Our Philosophy—Let the Alpacas Do the Rest

Passion for Alpacas, Dedication to Quality

Our motto says it best:
“We do our best, and let our alpacas do the rest.”

That guiding principle shaped how we cared for our animals and how we approached every product we offered. We treated our alpacas like family, prioritizing their health, comfort, and ethical treatment. Each spring, we sheared them to collect their wool—or "fiber"—which was then cleaned, spun, and turned into the soft, durable items that our customers love.

A Trusted Resource for Breeders and Fiber Artists

While we’ve relocated, our commitment to quality remains as strong as ever. Foothills Alpaca Farm continues to be a trusted name among alpaca breeders. We still offer one exceptional breeding male—our herdsire—who is now being cared for at a farm in Minnesota.

We also maintain a curated selection of alpaca products made from the fiber of our original herd. Our collection includes yarn, roving, scarves, and hats—each piece a lasting tribute to the alpacas we lovingly raised and cared for.

Looking Ahead—Preserving Our Passion

Foothills Alpaca Farm continues to share the essence of alpaca fiber through our handmade goods and ongoing support for the alpaca community. We work directly with customers to help them find the perfect products—whether it’s soft roving for spinning, luxurious yarn for a special project, or thoughtful gifts that celebrate a love for alpacas.

We’re also happy to consult with individuals interested in alpaca ownership. While we don’t offer animals directly, our years of experience in breeding, care, and fiber harvesting make us a valuable resource—and we’re glad to connect you with trusted farms in the area.
